Friday’s classic tune #7

A Tribe Called Quest - Jazz (We've Got)

To mark tomorrow’s Dublin show by legendary producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad our classic tune for today is none other than Jazz (We’ve Got) by A Tribe Called Quest.

As producer for A Tribe Called Quest – one of the most important hip hop outfits ever – Ali’s unique musical approach changed the landscape of hip hop music forever.

Even after the group split in the late 90s, Ali went on to work with artists like Brand New Heavies, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai. As part of Lucy Pearl he also brought us the funky classic Don’t Mess With My Man.

So no prizes for guessing where I’ll be tomorrow night. That’s right, here.

Indeed a classic. Funny thing, today I went looking for ‘Beats Rhymes and Life’ on my Ipod and it wasn’t there. You could say I was in a Tribe mood today. As members of the Native Tongues, they were met with the most success and to say it wasn’t warranted would be an crime against hip-hop itself. Can I Kick It, Scenario, Stressed Out and indeed one of their most iconic, as brought to you by El Niftys Friday Classic, Jazz (We Got) are just the (Q)-Tip of the iceberg!
